Mourinho: I won’t let Cech join another Premier League club

The Chelsea boss is desperate to hold onto the
32-year-old goalkeeper, even if it means keeping
him against his will, and praised his integral role
in the Blues’ title triumph
Jose Mourinho says he is ready to block Petr Cech
from leaving Chelsea this summer and has no
intention of allowing him to join a Premier League
rival.
The Portuguese installed Thibaut Courtois as the
Blues’ No.1 goalkeeper with Cech forced to play
second fiddle, prompting reported interest from a
host of clubs including Arsenal and PSG.
But, as revealed exclusively by Goal on Friday,
Chelsea have privately told the Gunners that they
have “no chance” of signing the 32-year-old.
Mourinho has reiterated that stance, saying he
wants two world-class keepers even if that means
keeping Cech in west London against his will –
though he admits the decision is not entirely in
his hands.
“One thing is Jose Mourinho and another is
[Roman] Abramovich, and another thing is the
board, because the board is a little bit of me and
a little bit of other people,” Mourinho told
reporters.
“If it was me, if it was my decision, the decision is
Petr to stay. That’s it. It would be my decision for
Petr to stay. Even against his will? Yes.
“I think that the club is more important than the
player and, as was true this season, the club
needs two very good goalkeepers.
“Without Petr this season, I don’t think the club
would be champions because he played six
important matches in the Premier League.
Without these points, we probably wouldn’t be
champions.
“For me, decision number one, Petr will stay. After
that, second point, to go but not in England. The
option I don’t want is for him to go to an English
club.
“But, I repeat, I am just the manager and he
means so much for this club and what he did in
this club, I think he deserves everything from this
club. If the club decision is different to mine I will
accept it.”
Cech has made six Premier League appearances
this season, five of which were starts, conceding
just one goal and keeping five clean sheets, with
the Blues winning every match in which he has
featured.
